Shepherd Roles - Experienced & Junior: Brownrigg Ag (Puketio)

+ Located in Poukawa, 20 minutes south of Hastings.
+ Develop a strong understanding of feed management with a range of crops.
+ Both roles are very well remunerated on an hourly rate basis.

WHERE
Brownrigg Agriculture is one of the largest privately owned farming agribusinesses in New Zealand, growing a wide range of natural farm produce. Based in the productive region of Hawke’s Bay, Brownrigg Agriculture has a long term focus, with the scale and internal controls to be a highly reliable supplier of premium products across its range of activities, spanning production cropping (export squash, onions, maize) through to lamb and cattle finishing.
Recently changing the way, they farm, to offer more career progression to their valued team, the management structure has been reviewed and an amalgamation of 10 farms to five, across a footprint of 7,000 hectares of freehold and leasehold land, enables a greater level of on-farm leadership and responsibility.

WHAT
Puketio is located in Poukawa, 20 minutes south of Hastings and is made up of three main blocks, totalling about 2,000ha. With 400ha newly leased adjacent to the main block, the team is now in the process of bringing that into production. This increase in size sees the need to employ an additional experienced shepherd into the existing team of four. There is also the opportunity for a junior shepherd to join the team and leverage from this great learning environment.
This is a mixed farming operation, with lamb and beef finishing combined with high value cash crops in the summer and lamb grazing through winter. With about 450ha of flats, 700ha of rolling country, and the balance in steeper hills there is plenty of mustering and dog work on offer. Working closely in a farm team of five – the Farm Manager, Stock Manager (2IC), another shepherd plus these two shepherding roles – you will help to drive farm performance and ensure the smooth operations of the farm.
An in-depth outline is in the job information form - https://bit.ly/3VNRlUY

WHO
We are looking for two shepherds – Experienced and Junior – who are physically fit, have great attitudes and are committed to learning and moving forward in the industry.

Experienced Shepherd Role

As the Experienced Shepherd you will be actively involved in implementing farm plans, ensuring feed quality targets and grazing plans are achieved, and keeping farm pride standards high. Alongside the farm team, additional support is available from a shared general team (Farm Support Team). Your day-to-day will include stock shifts, grazing assessment and feedback, animal health treatments, crutching / dagging, weighing / sorting stock, and general farm maintenance (including fencing repairs).

You will need to bring:
  • Good understanding of the fundamentals of farming.
  • High level of stockmanship with a team of 2 – 5 working dogs.
  • Excellent communication skills and a positive approach.
  • A desire to learn and develop your skills.
  • Interest and ability in utilising technology and modern systems.
  • Accurate record keeping skills.
  • A commitment to being safe at work.

Junior Shepherd Role

Taking on the Junior Shepherd role will offer a unique learning environment with the depth of expertise within this business, from the leadership team through to the broadly skilled Farm Support Team. If you can demonstrate a commitment to learning and have some previous exposure to livestock farming, either through school or some industry experience there is now an opportunity for you to join the team at Puketio. You will be involved in both stock and general work in this role. It is not a requirement to have working dogs upon starting as you will be mentored and helped into them over time. You will need good communication skills and a positive approach.

WHY
  • These rewarding positions provide learning opportunities for those who are passionate about farming and are looking to gain an understanding for finishing lambs and bulls.
  • For the right person, there could be future opportunities available on other BA-operated farms or roles within the wider business.
  • Brownrigg Agriculture has a strong culture of its own and in-itself is a thriving and busy community.
  • A generous total remuneration package is on offer for each of these roles which includes an accommodation allowance, whether you live on farm in a Brownrigg Agriculture house or off farm in a drive-in role.
  • The location offers a lot of opportunities and Hawke’s Bay is home to a variety of outdoor activities from beaches, wineries, sporting, and social opportunities.
