WHERE
Mapuna Dairies is part of a family-owned business. The property for this Contract Milker position is located in South Wairarapa 15 minutes from the bustling country towns of Featherston, Greytown and Martinborough. The unit runs 850 cows over 320ha and operates as a level 4 system. They grow their own maize and to support the farming operation they have ensured they have great infrastructure including a modern 60-bale rotary with cup removers, three pivot irrigators, and a feed pad.
The cows are wintered on a runoff block 30 minutes away and the replacement heifers have their own block 5km away. The bull calves are sent to Taranaki and are grown out to 100kg and sold.
WHAT
As the Contract Milker you will have previous exposure to large herd management within a high input operation and be fully responsible for the day-to-day farming operations. This role will require you to have strong organisational and planning skills and a high level of feed and pasture management experience.
With the owners living off farm, communication will be a key aspect alongside strong reporting and recording skills. Understanding financial management and focusing on production is also important. There is a person looking after the runoff blocks, but when the cows are there, you will be required to support them. The Contract Milker you will need to supply staff, motor bikes, calf rearing equipment, reels and standards. The owners will supply all the rubber-ware, pay the power & all shed running costs.
WHO
Our clients are looking for a person with a can-do attitude and strong initiative as there is the opportunity to increase production and establish yourself within this family business. The below are also key to success in this role:
- 5 years of dairy management, with exposure to large herds and high input systems.
- Strong grass management experience.
- Good level of animal health abilities.
- Strong communication skills.
- Relevant understanding of the different aspects of compliance (environment/HR/H&S).
- Good computer skills, reporting and financial understanding.
