WHERE

Matapiro Station is a privately owned farming operation, 25 minutes to Napier or Hastings, in the sunny Hawke’s Bay farming district of Crownthorpe. This 2300ha Station is an iconic farming business that is successfully running a large- scale breeding and finishing operation. This is a high performing property with good farming policies and excellent infrastructure in place. Our clients are very proud of their station, its history, and achievements to date.
 
WHAT

As the Shepherd you will work alongside and report to the Stock Manager in all aspects of the day-to-day running of the property, where there will be variety in your workday involving stock and general work. Upon proving yourself there will be the opportunity to gain responsibility.
Due to the scale of the property and the results they are currently achieving, you will have the opportunity to learn about finishing stock, while working closely with an excellent herd of breeding cows.
You will also be involved in learning about pasture management, stock rotations, and you will develop a strong understanding of animal health.
If you are keen to progress your farming career and learn the finer details of finishing stock and would enjoy working with an established herd of Angus breeding cows, then this role would be a good place to fine tune your finishing and breeding knowledge.

WHO

Our client is looking for a Shepherd with a can-do attitude and a high level of initiative to step into this role. The below are also key to success in this role:
  • A high level of stockmanship and 2-3 working dogs under good control.
  • Enjoy working both autonomously and in a team environment.
  • Have an inquiring mind and a keenness to learn.
  • Accurate record keeping skills.
  • Good animal welfare knowledge and practice.
  • Adherence to health & safety policies.
  • Fencing & general skills.
  • Handpiece experience - crutching and dagging – there are two crutching conveyors set up in woolshed and the farm does all its own dagging.
  • Drenching experience - through a conveyor system.
