WHERE
Located in the Whanawhana Valley, 50km west of Hastings, Awapai is a 2100 hectare (1600ha effective) farming business owned by the Beamish family. Situated in a secluded valley with amazing views of the ranges, this is a well-developed property and is mostly made up of easy hill country with some steeper slopes and some river terrace flats. The farm was severely impacted by Cyclone Gabrielle and a significant effort has gone into reinstating the farm’s infrastructure.

Awapai is an intensive sheep and cattle operation running approximately 5000 breeding ewes, lambs, 350 cows and their offspring and 300 Wagyu beef cattle. All animals are finished on farm except for the Wagyu.

Recently announced as the winners of the Regional Supreme Award at the East Coast Ballance Farm Environment Awards, the Beamish family have earned a reputation for excellent results in farm management, animal performance and farm forestry.

The judges were impressed with the use of innovation, technology and modern ideas, all implemented within the framework of a well-established and enduring family business.

WHAT
The 2IC will report to the Farm Manager and share responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the farm. They will work with all livestock, plant and machinery to maintain a high standard of performance and achievement. The below are some key responsibilities associated with the role:

  • Assist the management team with planning for grazing and feed budgeting.
  • Plan, coordinate and delegate tasks and information to shepherds and any casual staff as required.
  • Be involved with stock management from identifying and reporting issues to keeping detailed records of stock movements, pasture covers and stock numbers.
  • Responsible for providing information into farm systems including stock reconciliations, animal health and chemical records, and for Farm Assurance purposes.
  • Engage in a positive Health & Safety culture adopting best practice at all times.
  • Take responsibility for managing the woolshed and yards during shearing, crutching and dagging as required.
  • Demonstrate excellence when handling stock and adopt the highest animal welfare practices.
  • Budgeting responsibility sits with the Farm Owners, but input is welcomed from the Farm Manager and 2IC.

WHO
The Owners and Farm Manager seek a 2IC who is hands-on and has a capable team of 5-6 dogs. The below skills will also ensure you every success in this role:

  • Excellent stockmanship capability.
  • Pasture management and feed budgeting skills.
  • Staff management and leadership skills – happy to share knowledge and develop the skills of junior staff.
  • Strong eye for detail and production focused.
  • Show a keen interest in innovation and the technical aspects of farming.
  • Highly organised with strong communication skills.
  • Must be computer literate.
  • Sense of humour and a strong team player.
  • A current restricted driver’s licence at a minimum.
