Shepherd General - Karaka Farms

WHERE
Karaka Farm (240ha) & Gumtree Gate (540ha) are two privately owned breeding and finishing properties, located 5km apart; 20 minutes south of Havelock North in the beautiful Tukituki Valley.
Both properties are an easy to rolling contour with the main property, Gumtree Gate, having one boundary on the beautiful Tukituki River. There is an additional 80ha lease block adjacent to Gumtree Gate. The properties are well sub-divided, with a mix of conventional and electric fences. There are laneways through both properties, allowing for easy stock shift and access to the yards.
Over the past 5 years, the owners have become fully committed to using regenerative farming practices. They have done significant agricultural and environmental development and are committed to continuing the development process using regenerative principles.
 
WHAT
Due to the current Shepherd General returning to his family farm our client is now searching for a suitable replacement. As the Shepherd General you will be working alongside the Farm Manager with all day-to-day tasks, from stock work through to general work, split 60:40. Our clients are looking for a person with minimum 12-18 months farming experience, who enjoys a variety within their work and who will be able to manage themselves in the absence of the Farm Manager.
The mix of work from stock to general will give you a good base, and you will bring a team of 2-4 working dogs that are under good control. As your understanding of the role progresses there is the opportunity for further responsibility.

WHO
Our client is looking for a self-motivated Shepherd General with a true passion for farming and learning. The below are also key to success in this role:
  • Experienced at handling stock as monitoring of stock weights and condition are an important part of the business.
  • An interest and willingness to learn about regenerative principles.
  • Show initiative and flexibility with the ability to work independently.
  • Great communication skills as you will be working closely with the manager.
  • A competency in fencing, tractor driving and the use of side by sides.
  • A current restricted driver’s licence at a minimum.
