Deer Stock Person | Poronui Station

  • Located in Taharua Valley, 30 minutes from Taupo.

WHERE
Poronui Station is a 6481 ha property located in the Taharua Valley, 30-minutes southeast of Taupo just off State H/way 5. It is a multi-tier business that includes hunting and fishing along with tourism and accommodation and Deer/sheep/cattle farming. Within the 6481ha there is a 1100 ha hunting block.

The deer enterprise includes trophy stags, velveting and breeding hinds. They have an ET (embryo transfer) program for the trophy stags and currently they are releasing 60 trophy stags into their 1100 ha game estate. They have approximately 999 stags and 620 hinds to support their 550ha deer unit.
 
They have also established a cattle and lamb trading component which comprises of 2400 trading steers and heifers and finishing between 6,500-7,000 lambs. Both the lambs and cattle are brought in from August onwards, finished and off the property pre-winter.
 
 
WHAT
As the Deer Stock person, you will be reporting to the Stock Manager and working closely with the deer farming policies. Previous experience working with deer will be key, understanding how they work, mustering them and working in the deer shed with them.
 
Along with the deer work you will also be working with the cattle and lambs.
There is always a variety of work when on farm and completing any general repairs as and when required, this may include tractor operating, fencing repairs and water maintenance.

WHO
Poronui Station are looking for a stock person who is a forward thinker and a self-starter with good time management. The below are also key to success in this role:
  • Quality stock management and feeding.
  • Open to working with all classes of livestock.
  • Good team of dogs under good command (2-3).
  • Good working knowledge of current technology (TSi and Trutest.)
  • Excellent record keeping and computer literacy.
  • Can work alone and in a team.
  • Is able to take direction well and an effective communicator.
  • Takes pride in their work and personal presentation.
  • Velveting certificate is an advantage.
